Google Posts Record Profit, But Two-Thirds Is Unearned

Google's Enormous Profit Comes With a Bigger Question Mark Than Ever Alphabet, Google's parent company, released its quarterly earnings report recently, leaving investors and observers perplexed.

On the surface, it appears to be a resounding success: $112. 1 billion in profit, nearly four times what it made last year.

However, a closer examination reveals that two thirds of this impressive figure is actually money made on paper – gains from investments that haven't been sold for cash yet.
