The notion that eating habits can significantly impact cognitive health is well established. A clinical trial conducted by researchers led by Prof Sue Shapses involved 47 women aged 50 to 79 with overweight or obesity. Participants were divided into two groups: one that confined their eating to a nine-hour window between 10am and 6pm, and another that spread their meals over a longer period. The results showed that those adhering to the time-restricted eating regimen performed better on spatial planning and problem-solving tests than their counterparts.
The study’s small sample size and preliminary findings mean more research is needed to confirm its implications. However, the connection between circadian rhythms and metabolism is complex, and evidence suggests that eating within a narrow window can have significant benefits for cognitive health. A review published earlier this year found that finishing meals before 7pm was associated with improvements in body weight, BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure, and markers of metabolic health.
For individuals at risk of dementia, the potential benefits of time-restricted eating are tantalizing. By restricting mealtimes to a narrow window, it may be possible to improve memory recall and reduce mistakes linked to memory, attention, and problem-solving. While this approach is not without its challenges – many people eat over 14-hour periods, leaving only 10 hours overnight without food – research continues to uncover the benefits of time-restricted eating.
Prof Wendy Hall noted that confining mealtimes to a narrow window “may have benefits for the brain” and could provide an additional tool in the fight against dementia. Further investigation is needed to understand why this particular regimen may be beneficial, but it suggests that time-restricted eating is a plausible approach to supporting cognitive health in midlife and older adults with overweight.
