The rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has reduced our carbon footprint but created an unexpected challenge: finding skilled technicians to maintain and repair them. A recent report by Pollution Probe highlights the gaps in training and certification of automotive technicians, particularly for high-voltage safety, battery diagnostics, and power electronics.

This issue is not just about EVs; it’s a symptom of a broader problem in the auto industry. With proprietary technology and non-standardized designs becoming increasingly prevalent, manufacturers are making it difficult for independent shops and community colleges to provide adequate training and certification. This affects not only school buses but also all electric vehicles as their adoption accelerates.

Standardizing EV content in trade curricula and providing ongoing training opportunities for existing technicians is essential for creating value and leading the industry through technological evolution. However, this requires significant investment from both government and industry stakeholders. Michael Lomnicki, a professor at Centennial College, emphasizes that standardization is crucial for creating value.

Proprietary technology is a major obstacle in servicing EVs, according to Emily Chung of the Automotive Industries Association of Canada. Manufacturers often refuse to provide necessary information or charge exorbitant fees that repair shops can’t afford. This highlights the need for greater collaboration between manufacturers, educators, and regulatory bodies.

Andrew Ackers’ NAPA AutoPro shop in Hamilton offers an encouraging example of private companies stepping up to fill the gap. His EV training program, Next Drive, provides a comprehensive and affordable solution for technicians to acquire necessary skills. However, this is just a drop in the ocean compared to the scale of the problem.

Canada aims to reach 75% of new vehicle sales being electric by 2035, making it imperative that we address these challenges head-on. The report recommends integrating EV content into trade curricula and providing ongoing training opportunities for existing technicians. However, this is only a starting point.

To truly prepare our workforce for the EV revolution, we must consider the long-term implications of our choices. We’re not just talking about cars; we’re discussing a fundamental shift in how we live, work, and interact with technology. As Chung aptly puts it, “Repairing and maintaining these cars is the most sustainable solution.” However, this requires more than just training technicians – it demands a comprehensive approach that integrates education, industry, and policy.

As we move towards a future dominated by electric vehicles, it’s time to acknowledge the paradox at play. We’re creating new opportunities for sustainability while exposing existing gaps in our workforce and infrastructure. The question is: can we bridge this gap before it’s too late?
